Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human society and culture. A major in Humanities exposes you to an interdisciplinary approach to learning in an attempt to probe the complexities and variance of the human experience. Humanities education encourages students to think creatively and critically, to reason, and ask questions. And, as the Humanities offer insight into nearly every aspect of life, they have been considered a core element of a well-rounded education since ancient times. The Humanities help us understand and interpret the human experience, as individuals and societies. The humanities entail the study of the human world and society from a critical perspective.

 

There are a number of reasons to study humanities. For one, this field helps build cross-cultural understanding. For example, as you learn a foreign language, you’re slowly able to communicate with and understand people that you couldn’t before. As you study different humanities subjects, you’ll also challenge your creativity and analytical thinking skills. Both are great qualities of successful students and employees. Some other benefits of studying humanities are that you’ll develop strong written and verbal communication skills, expand your worldview and clarify your values, and become an informed citizen. It provides flexibility for students to explore specific areas of interest, work toward career goals, or prepare for graduate or professional study.

 

The Institute of Humanities has grown out of the Faculty of Philology and Faculty of History and International Relations. In 2014, the Institute of Humanities of Syktyvkar University and the Faculty of Philology of the Komi State Pedagogical Institute merged. Since then, it has been developed into eight departments: the Department of Russian Philology and General Philology, the Department of Journalism, the Department of Public Relations and Advertising, the Department of Komi Philology, Finno-Ugric Studies and Regional Studies, the Department of Philosophy and Social and Political Sciences, the Department of Philosophy and Ethics, the Department of Political Science and International Relations, the Department of Philology.

There are Scientific and Educational Centers created on the basis of the Institute:

A Training Center for Practical Television and Radio Journalism has been established at the Institute of Humanities. Here students of the “Journalism” major do practical training.

— the course “The Finno-Ugric World in the Context of International European Cooperation”.

The degree in Humanities discovers the flexibility of human mind and makes it open-minded. Hence, a flexible open-mind is the factory of ideas. And that is why there are many industries always have job opening for Humanities graduates. Some of them are:
